Why We Need NARFE

From the January 2009 issue of the NARFE Magazine's "Legislative Report":

If civil service retirement is sound, why are we at risk of being cut?

During previous periods of entitlement reform, policymakers first discussed cutting the “big three” –Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.  However, when lawmakers realized the political liabilities of cutting a program like Social Security, which has 40 million beneficiaries (77 million by 2030), they turned to the “captive audience” of federal retirees–a much smaller constituency (2.3 million retirees and survivors).  In fact, during the budget crises of the 1980s and early 1990s, Federal retirees and survivors lost $50 billion in deferred, reduced and canceled cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), while 40 million Social Security beneficiaries’ COLAs were not cut.  It is up to NARFE to make both a substantive case and a political one to ward off reductions in federal civil service retirement.
