If your taxable net income is $80,000 and you live in Montgomery County:
Your Maryland tax liability is $90 + 0.0475 × ($80,000 – $3,000) = $3,747.50.
Your local tax rate is 0.0320 and your County tax is 0.0320 × $80,000 = $2,560.
Your total tax (State of Maryland + County) is $6,307.50.
Note: a good rule of thumb for most Maryland residents is that their total tax is approximately 8% of their taxable net income.
Tax breaks that seniors receive in Maryland:

  • If you are age 65 or older, you receive an additional $1,000 deduction.
  • A pension exclusion of $29,900 is allowed.
  • Individuals 55 years old or older can have their retirement income qualify for the State pension exclusion if their retirement income is attributable to employment as a law enforcement officer or as fire, rescue, or emergency services personnel of the United States, the State, or a local jurisdiction.
